Iolanta,Tchaikovsky's rarity that has never been performed at the Metropolitan Opera,has now been paired with Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle.Together they comprise an eerie film noir double bill.Polish director Mariusz Trelinski presents the two one-arts as a metaphor of 'wanting to see too much' with contrasting results.The concept works most effectively in Bluebeard,which turned the psychological drama into a real suspense,with a claustrophobic set,horror-enhancing lighting,and characters popping up in unexpected places.This was definitely a castle with no exit.
