Vague Language and the Function of Expressing Politeness

模糊语言是礼貌表达的一个重要策略,在交际中,人们为了遵守“礼貌原则”,可以合理地使用模糊语言来维护双方的面子,使交际顺利进行。本文以模糊语言理论为出发点。利用“礼貌原则”分析了模糊语言中的模糊限制语、模糊范畴识别符、本身意义模糊的词语在交际中的礼貌表达功能。

Vague language is one of the most important politenessstrategies. In order to observe the Politiness Principle, we can employ vague language appropriately so that the face of the interlocutor can be saved to let communication go on smoothly. Based on the theories on vague language, and by employing the politeness principle, this paper seeks to analyze how the various forms of vague language—hedges, vague category identifiers and intrinsical vague words are used to perform the function of expressing politeness.
