方苞散文的基本特征是“虚言其大略” ,非以往所言“清真雅正”。无论叙述、议论 ,他都舍弃甚多 ,只略言一二 ,以虚见实 ,以略为详 ,追求“意在言外”的含蓄。感情、语言也洗涤甚净。“虚言其大略”与传统散文的虚实详略手法有差异 。

The basic feature of Fang Bao's essays is 'brief\|but\|to\|the\|point', not as is known to all as 'of grace and refined tastes'. In whatever he relates or states he does abandon a lot and does his writings in a fithy style, so as to show, in fact, his rich content. He pursues 'implicitness between the lines' and, moreover, the emotion and language in his essays is also intensely purified. This 'brief\|but\|to\|the\|point' feature is actually quite different from the fithy style of writing, as is a general acceptance previously. And it's just the reflection of Fang Bao's life experience as well as the mirror of his personality in literature.
