From Mother Culture to Hybrid Culture: the "Root-Seeking" Narrative of Zhang Ling as a New Immigrant Writers

在主题表达、情感表现和叙事处理等方面,新移民作家的"寻根"叙事比早期华人移民作家有所削弱,但是作为一种承续性的文化主题,新移民作家的"寻根"叙事表现出一种新的叙事可能和新的文化立场。以张翎为例,她以回望的视角来追忆故国乡土的的"寻根"叙事,具有三个方面的叙事意义:首先,通过情感意义上的"恋母情结"来写"文化恋母",这是张翎征用"中国经验"讲述"中国故事"的一种叙述策略;其次,通过对性别身份和族裔身份的追根溯源,完成对个体文化身份的重新定位;最后,其"寻根"叙事基于"寻根"而超越"寻根",努力寻求族裔与族裔之间、人性与宗教神性之间的互通和互融。这种螺旋上升、动态建构的"寻根"叙事体现了张翎等新移民作家鲜明的世界主义文化观,反映了全球化语境中文化"混杂性"的时代特征。

Although the'root-seeking'narrative of the new Chinese immigrant writers is weaker than that of the early ones in terms of theme,emotional expression and narrative,as a continuing theme of culture,the'root-seeking'narrative of the new immigrant writers shows a new narrative possibility and cultural stand.Taking Zhang Ling as an example,her'root-seeking'narrative in which she recalls her homeland with retrospective perspective is unique in three aspects:firstly,writing the emotional'Oedipus complex'to embody cultural'Oedipus complex'is a narrative strategy that Zhang Ling tells'Chinese story'with'Chinese experience';secondly,the reorientation of the cultural identity for individuals is accomplished through tracing the gender and ethnic identity;finally,Zhang Ling’s'root-seeking'narrative is based on'root-seeking'and transcends it,striving to seek the exchange and integration among ethnic groups and between human nature and religious divinity.The spiral ascending and dynamic construction of the'root-seeking'narrative reflects distinctive cosmopolitan cultural outlook of new immigrant writers like Zhang Ling,and the times feature of cultural'hybridity'in the context of globalization.
