From Wei-Jin Style to Mid-Tang Spirit

“盛唐精神”是在对“魏晋风度”进行完善、修正的基础上 ,形成的一种新的民族文化理想和精神范式。从文人个性和玄儒关系的演变来看 ,自然适意、脱俗求奇以及心灵需求的多样化构成了它最重要的三大特征。在盛唐文人身上 ,魏晋文人普遍具有的内在紧张和焦虑已经消除 ,仕与隐、玄与儒均得到了较为完满的统一。因而 ,他们的人格更健全 ,审美心理更加恬静平和 。

Based on the improvement of 'Wei-Jin Style', the 'Mid-Tang Spirit' is a new national cultural ideal and a new pattern of spirit. Viewed from the intellectual's personality and the change of the relationship between metaphysicians and Confucians, it has three obvious features: natural congeniality, non-secularity and the variety of inner need. The inner tension and anxiety demonstrated by intellectuals of Wei-Jin dynasties disappeared among the intellectuals of Mid-Tang dynasty. Therefore, they have a more complete personality, more quiet aesthetic mentality and more careful aesthetic insight.
