经过明治维新 ,有了强大海军的日本 ,为了切断中国与朝鲜之间传统的宗藩关系 ,以朝鲜为跳板进攻中国 ,挑起丰岛海战 ,使甲午战争爆发。在丰岛海战中 ,处于劣势的中国舰队 ,进行了英勇抵抗 ,打击了骄横的日本舰队。因双方实力相差悬殊 ,中国的旗舰济远号管带方伯谦 ,在作战失利后 ,又放弃了护航任务 ,一味退走 ,致使中方在海战中损失惨重 ,80 0多名船载陆军官兵葬身海底。北洋舰队的爱国官兵由此产生了强烈的复仇情绪。李鸿章却畏敌 ,放弃了制海权 ,导致中国在整个甲午战争中的失败。

Japan possessed the strong navy through the Meiji Reform. Japan provoked the naval battle near Fengdao Island in order to cut the traditional relations between China and Korea which was a vassal state of China and attacked China by way of Korea as a spring board. The War of 1894 broke out. The Chinese fleet was in an inferior position in the naval battle near Fengdao Island, but it made brave resistance and struck back the arrogant Japanese fleet. The strength of both sides was in a great disparity. After military reverses, Fang Bo- qian, the Chinese captain of Jiyuan flagship, gave up the task of defending other ships and retreated blindly, so the Chinese side lost heavily in the naval battle. The over eight hundred shipbased officers and men of land force fell into the sea and were drowned. The patriotic officers and men of the Northern Ocean Fleet evinced strong revengeful feelings, while Li Hong- zhang was afraid of Japan and gave up mastery of the seas. It led China to fail in the War of 1894.
