Enlightenment of Mencius Views on Integrity and Interest

孟子十分重视物质利益 ,但他认为任何人对物质利益的追求 ,必须自觉地受到道德规范的制约。当物质利益与道德规范发生矛盾时 ,则应当无条件地坚持道德规范而放弃物质利益。孟子认为 ,只有在遵循道德规范的前提下 ,才有可能真正获致最大的物质利益。

While paying full attention to material interests, Mencius held that pursuit of material interests must be fulfilled under the regulation of ethnical norms. In the event of a conflict between the two, the former must be sacrificed to maintain the latter; for, as he argued, it was only by so doing can material interests be served to the utmost.
