Modernist novelists in the West usually have deliberate intentions to make formal innovations, of which verbal originality and linguistic foregroundings permeate their fictional texts. Therefore, in the eyes of the modernist novelists, language is the very home of fiction and writing fiction means writing language. By employing a closereading approach the present paper aims to offer a textual interpretation of as well as a critical review on Dubliners, the first literary work by James Joyce, a worldfamous 20th century novelist of Ireland. It concludes that language, which plays a significant role in the artistic making of the organic unity of the 15 short stories in Dubliners, has markedly been an indispensable element in the 20th century fiction. Without its verbal uniqueness a novel or a short story would likely undermine its aesthetic values.
