Did not Superintendencies of Merchant Shipping in the Early Song Dynasty Seek Profits?

南宋著名学者陈傅良对北宋初海外贸易收入的一个判断长期没有受到质疑。他认为宋初朝廷设置市舶司不是为了增加收入 ;在开征进口税的初期 ,政府外贸收入还很少。本文从宋朝外贸收入结构、设置市舶司的政治背景、管理人员组成等方面对此提出了批评。

Chen Fuliang, a famous scholar of the Song Dynasty, held that the government's aim was not to seek profits when it set up the superintendencies of merchant shipping in the early Northern Song period. His view is accepted by many researchers. Through an analysis of the dynasty's foreign trade revenue, the political situation and the personnel of the superintendencies, this paper attempts to challenge Chen's judgment.
