The syntheses of three new optically active β-mercaptoalcohols,(R)-1,1-diphenyl-2-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol, (R)-1,1-diphenyl-2-mercapto-4-methyl-1-pentanol, and(R)-1,1-diphenyl-2-mercapto-1-benzenepropanol from the corresponding amino acids are described. Theenantiomeric excesses of these β-mercaptoalcohols were determined by ~1H NMR as their(S)-mandeloyl derivatives.
