近代的知识分子是当代社会中一个独特的群体。面对历史性的民族危机,他们表现出:(1)同一个“救亡图存,富国强兵”的心愿;(2)共一条学习西方的道路;(3)开放与守旧并蓄的“中体西用”原则;(4)幻想化的教育救亡途径;(5)痛苦的“鱼”与“熊掌”的选择。显现出当代知识分子在特定的历史背景下所作的强国之举,及其在客观上推进中国社会近代化进程的有限却富历史意义的作用。

The intellectuals in modern times are a unique colony in contemporary society. In the face of a historic national crisis, they demonstrate: 1) the same aspiration of saving the nation from subjugation to ensure its survival and making china rich with military power;2) a common wish to learn from the west;3) adhering to the principle of utilizing western ideas for china by keeping its traditional practices; 4) an illusionized way to save the nation by education; and 5) a painful choice between'fish'and'bear' s paw' , which reflected the act of such intellectuals in the particular historic background and their limited, bat significant functions in the promotion of the progress in china from an objective view.
