赵元任是美国中文教学的开拓者与奠基人。本文回顾了赵元任在中文教学上的卓越贡献和重要观点,并结合其教学实践与理论对当下中文教学存在的问题进行了分析和阐释,这对当前中文教学及学科建设具有一定的意义。全文分上、下两篇,上篇集中讨论赵元任在美国中文教学史上如何由书面语教学转向口语的过程,及其在语音、语法与教学法上的特殊贡献。

Professor Yuen Ren Chao was a pioneer and pathfi nder of Chinese language teaching in the US. This paper reviews Mr. Chao's outstanding contributions and important ideas in the field of Chinese language teaching and, in light of his teaching practice and theory, analyzes and elaborates on the problems currently existing in the field, which is meaningful for current Chinese language teaching and the construction of the discipline. This paper is divided into two parts. This is the fi rst part, focusing on how Mr.Chao turned Chinese language teaching in the US from the teaching of classical Chinese to the teaching of colloquial Chinese as well as on his extraordinary contributions to the studies of Chinese phonetics, grammar and pedagogy.
