Li Dongyang and the Taige Style

李东阳从内容、功能、艺术风貌、文体分类等层面,较为全面、客观地探讨了台阁体的文体特征。李东阳对"三杨"台阁体推崇有加,既有沿袭,又有革新,且前者有甚于后者。就革新方面言之,李东阳引山林体文风入台阁体,试图调和二者,以纠台阁体末流之弊,虽收到一定效果,但最终未能挽救其覆亡之运。尽管如此,李东阳改革文风的发轫之功,仍不可磨灭。

Li Dongyang explored objectively and comprehensively the stylistic features of Taige style in terms of its content,functions,artistic traits,and style classification,etc. With great admiration for the poetic style of'Yang Shiqi,Yang Rong and Yang Bo'—three representative poets of the 'Taige style',Li Dongyang both followed and renovated their style. In terms of renovation,Li Dongyang tried to effect a reconciliation of the Taige style with Sahnlin style by introducing some elements of the latter into the former so as to redress the defects of the Taige style at its later and decadent stage,which,though effective to some extent,still failed to prevent the ultimate destiny of degeneration for the Taige style. For all this,Li Dongyang's endeavor to initiate innovation in the literary style is of everlasting significance.
