A Comparative Study of Kinship Term Generalization in Chinese and English and Its Cultural Origin

文章对汉英两种语言的亲属称谓进行较为全面系统的对比研究,旨在找到两种语言中亲属称谓泛化现象的根源所在。亲属称谓在语言交际中具有重要的情感传递功能,正确理解和掌握亲属称谓及其泛化变体在汉英两种语言中的使用,了解两种语言亲属称谓泛化现象的根本原因,将优化跨文化交际的实际效果,使情感在语言交流中得到有效的传递。

This paper aims to make a comparative study of the kinship terms in Chinese and English in a com-plete and systematic manner so as to find out the causes for the generalization of kinship terms in the two languages. Given the vital role of kinship terms in conveying emotions in verbal communications, a proper comprehension and command of the use of kinship terms and their generalized variants in Chinese and English as well as an acquaint-ance of the very causes for kinship term generalization in the two languages will optimize the real effect of cross-cultural communication and ensure the effective emotional transfer in language communication.
