A Preliminary Discussion of the Function of the Gauze Gown in Plain Color

学界对马王堆汉墓出土的两件素纱襌衣的研究,比较注重于其织造技术,而对其文化内涵的探讨并不多见,现有的解释并没有摆脱其作为衣服御寒、遮羞与美化的实用功能。本文从丧葬礼俗的角度来分析,认为这种特殊的葬服另有应用,可能为用于复礼的丧葬明器之衣。

Researches on the two gauze gowns in plain color unearthed from the Han tombs at Mawangdui mainly focus on their weaving techniques rather than on their cultural content.The current explanations mostly concentrate on such practical functions of these gowns as protection against the cold,covering up one's sensitive parts or adding a touch to one's beauty.This article,through the analysis from the point of funerary customs,proposes that such unique burial garments have other functions and that they probably are funerary garments for the deceased to return to propriety.
