During the period from Pre-Qin to the Qin-Han dynasties,no matter what forms the pants took, they were mainly worn by soldiers or lower-class laborers while the upper class rulers mostly wore long dresses, robes or skirts. This phenomenon is proven by the characters in the silk paintings from the Han tombs at Mawangdui,by the funerary wooden fi gurines and the characters in paintings from other tombs of the same period, and by historical records. The people wearing pants in the silk painting from the Han tombs at Mawangdui demonstrate four types of pants worn at that time. This is very important for the study of the development of pants and corrects the past one-sided understanding of Han dynasty pants.
