A Brief Investigation on Concubines of the Sixteen Nations

十六国后妃事迹在《晋书》中无专传记载,其后妃制度基本上模仿魏晋,但并不严格,主要特点为:种族来源不一,胡汉交杂,少数民族婚姻的一些遗风犹存;宫廷中的权力纷争与社会上的民族矛盾纠缠在一起。这种情况随着时间的推移与汉化程度的加深也逐渐发生变化。

The concubines of the Sixteen Nations were not written down in special biographies in the Book of the Jin Dynasty. The regulations for concubines are mostly but not rigidly imitated from those of Wei and Jin Dynasties. The main features are: the source of ethnic groups are different; people of the minorities and the Han nationality live together; there exists tradition of the marriage of minorities; the struggle for power in the court and social conflicts among nations get entangled. This situation gradually changed with the passage of time and deepening of the harmonious relationship between the Han nationality and other minorities.
