The fire of moxa is the fire of pure yang, also called the fire of earth. There are cold and heat, deficiency and excess in people′s constitution and diseases.Moxibustion can treat many diseases, but not all patients and diseases can be treated by moxibustion. For patients with Taiyang exterior syndrome, moxibustion should be used cautiously to prevent the exterior pathogen from damaging yin and yang by entering into the inside body and transforming heat or perspiration.Moxibustion is forbidden in febrile diseases and sunstroke in order to prevent heat from hurting yin and causing deterioration of a case. For excessive heat and damp-heat syndrome, moxibustion should be used cautiously to prevent fire from becoming excessive, which consumes qi and fluid. For those with deficiency of yin and blood and insufficiency of body fluid, moxibustion should be used carefully to prevent heat from burning yin and fluid, damaging yin and yang.In clinical moxibustion,we should not only grasp its indications, but also understand its contraindications. It is forbidden to use moxibustion for patients with exogenous excessive fever, insufficiency of yin and blood, liver depression and internal heat,damp-heat constitution or infectious emergencies.
