On the Cultural Factors in the Development of Bai Written Characters

本文通过对方块白文与其他汉字系民族文字的横向比较 ,从文字符号的选用 ,南诏、大理国统治阶级以及白族士大夫阶层对白文的态度等方面 ,力图说明白文的文化属性 ,即它是特定文化环境的产物 ,其形成、发展都和特定的文化环境相联系。

This is a comparative study between Bai written characters (square in form) and other ethnic written scripts belonging to the Han language. Through an analysis of the choice of these characters and the attitudes of the ruling class and the literati and officialdom towards Bai written characters in the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom, the author tries to expound the cultural property of Bai characters and concludes that they were products of special cultural surroundings on which their formation and development relied.
