This paper analyzes the characteristics of'paper son'in Fae Myenne Ng's Steer Toward Rockand examines its impact on personal,family and community relations of Chinese Americans with mainstream society within historical context. Adopting a combination of historical evidence and literary imagination,the author shows the Chinese American experiences that were affected by Chinese Confession Program during the Mc Carthy era,and the continued trauma caused by'Paper son'. On the other hand, the phenomena of'Paper son'also influenced Chinese community's social relations.
