A Study of Evolution of the Japanese Word “ittemireba”

「いってみれば」一词与「言い換えれば」「言わば「等词在意思和用法上都很相近,但作为一个独立词,它在结构上有着明显的不同——它包含动词「いう」的连用形、语义虚化了的动词「みる「以及条件形助词「ば「这三个组成部分。本文通过历时性调查,究明这三个部分逐渐演化成「いってみれば」一词的过程,得出以下结论:先于「いってみれば」出现的「いはば(いわば)」,奠定了评注类表达形式以条件形出现的结构基础。

Both the meaning and the usage of the word'ittemireba(いってみれば)'are quite similar to several other words such as'iikaereba(言い換えれば)'and'iwaba(言わば)'.However,as an independent word,the structure of'ittemireba'significantly differs from the others.It is consisted of three components:the conjunctive form of the verb 'iu(い う)',grammaticalized verb 'miru(み る)'and conditional auxiliary verb 'ba(ば)'.Through diachronic research,this paper focuses on the evolutionary process of the word and comes to the following conclusion:'iwaba(いはば(いわば))'appeared earlier than'ittemireba(いってみれば)'and has established a structural basis for comment expressions presenting in supposition.
