高度重视自然科学特别是我国自然科学的发展是毛泽东的一贯思想。为了推动我国自然科学的发展,他不仅强调"自然科学是人们争取自由的一种武装",系统论述了自然科学认识世界、改造世界、推动社会发展进步的重要作用,而且提出了发展我国自然科学的基本构想,强调自然科学研究应当以马克思主义为指导,必须遵循"百家争鸣"的方针,必须建立一支宏大的又红又专的科学技术队伍,既要坚持自力更生又要"洋为中用"。

Attaching great importance to the natural science, especially the development of natural science in China is within MAO Zedong's consistent consideration. In order to promote the development of natural science in China, he not only emphasized that natural science was a kind of arm which people fought for freedom elaborating systematically the important role of the natural science to know the world, change the world, and promote the progress of society, but put forward the basic conception for the development of natural science in our country, emphasizing that natural scientific research should be guided by the Marxism, must follow the policy of 'contention of a hundred schools of thought', must establish a grand red and dedicated team of science and technology, and has to insist on both self-reliance and 'foreign things serving China'.
