From Gospel Spreading to the Female Education——The Course of Indigenization of Chinese Christian University

中国源远流长的儒家文化强调男尊女卑、女子无才便是德,这是教会女子大学进入中国的重要社会历史背景。传教士在中国率先创办女子大学的初衷是为了培养高层次的女性神职人员,以利于更广泛地传播基督福音,但我们不能因此否认教会大学在发展中国女子高等教育方面的开创之功。中国的教会女子大学经历了从"传教机构"到"教育机构"的功能转变。

The Chinese Confucian culture considers that males are more valuable than females and those illiterate females are virtuous.This is the important social historical background when the Christian Universities come into China.The inner motive of those missionaries establishing female universities in China is to train more female missionaries so that they can spread the Gospel widely.Nevertheless,we can not deny that Christian Universities have initially developed Chinese female higher education.The function of Chinese Christian Female Universities has changed from missionary institution to education institution.
