There is a very close relationship between Japanese gardens and Chinese gardening and painting. From the Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty, Chinese gardening culture was input from China to Japan, and the pond garden style arose as the first form, then it developed into sand and rock garden through combining with Japanese environment. In the Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty Chinese painting had a great influence on Japan, a large number of outstanding gardening artists with great painting skills came to China then put painting art into gardens(mainly in Muromachi period), and then they invented the picturesque gardens which developed in later stages and came to be mature. The picturesque gardens are always expressed in the sand and rock gardens, at first by the vertical style, then the vertical-horizontal style, finally horizontal style.
