This paper is intended to explore the various women characters from different spheres of America in the Filipino-American writer Carlos Bulosan's autobiographical novel America Is in the Heart through a close reading. These characters function a lot both as images which help draw a panorama of the divergently contradictory America and as an awakening force which exerts great influences on the protagonist Allos's growth and maturity. In the book it is often a white woman who symbolizes the America to which Bulosan's Filipinos want to belong and it is often women that symbolize what is kind and beautiful of America. It is also woman that serves as a healing power to the protagonist after his encounter with the brutality of America. The intellectual white women guide Allos's education and lead him to his social awakening,to avert the function of education as a strategy of acculturation into a strategy of subversion, and strengthen his determination to reconstruct the old world and to build a modern utopian world.
