Beloved is a representative work by the eminent contemporary American writer Toni Morrison, who is also black and female. The novel's prestige was a major contributory factor in her receiving the 1993 Nobel Prize in literature. This thesis sets forth the impor tance of investigating Morrison's unique slave narrative style and its place in black literature. Morrison's slave narrative disclosed the slaves' interior lives from a female slave perspective and rewrote the black woman stereotypes in traditional slave narratives and American literary canon; and so withdrew the black veil extended over history as it really was, and 'filled in the blanks' the traditional slave narrative left out; therefore Morrison made contribution to the reconstruction of black slave literature.
