This paper will focus on a particular issue in intercultural communication:the translation of allusions in one of Shakespeare's work-The Merchant of Venice.Through a general discussion on cultural issues in understanding and translation in which allusion is considered as a literary device,the translation of allusion could be seen as a way to investigation the possible problems of and solution to cultural barriers in translation.
