Ernst-August Gutt demonstrates, in Translation and Relevance, that relevance theory can be utilized to explain a wide spectrum of translation phenomena and the task of a translator is to present to target language readers the communicative clues that can help them derive the optimal relevant contextual assumption from the communicative context. The article is to cite some typical examples to expound communicative clues, covert translation, primary/secondary communicative situations, as well as direct translation and indirect translation.
