Getting out of the Trouble of Self-Orientalism and Reshaping Translators’Cultural Identity

自我东方主义指的是东方世界用东方主义话语方式言说自身。翻译,作为东方世界的一种重要的社会活动,作为不同文化间的桥梁,不可避免的受到自我东方主义现象的影响,成为巩固殖民主义话语的重要工具。通过分析张爱玲小说英译本中的典型例证,文章旨在揭示中国译者的自我东方主义倾向,探索张爱玲翻译中自我东方主义现象产生的原因及其负面影响,并就中国译者如何重塑自身文化身份提出三条可行性建议,以期帮助有自我东方主义倾向的中国译者走出困境,找到自己真正的文化根基,在推动中国特色文化走向世界舞台的过程中扮演更加重要的角色。

Self-Orientalism means that the Orient speaks of itself with the use of Orientalist discourse system. Translation, as a bridge between different cultures, and as an important social activity in the Orient, is influenced by the phenomena of Self-Orientalism inevitably and becomes the tool of enhancing the colonialist discourse. By analyzing some typical examples in Zhang Ailing’s English versions, this paper aims to reveal the existence of the tendency of Self-Orientalism among Chinese translators, Zhang Ailing in particular. What’s more, this paper tries to explore the reasons and side effects of Zhang Ailing’s Self-Orientalism in the process of translation, and to provide three feasible suggestions for those Chinese translators who bear the tendency of Self- Orientalism to reshape their culture identity. Finally, this paper hopes to guide Chinese translators to get out of the trouble of Self- Orientalism and find out the real cultural root, and play a more significant role in carrying forward Chinese special culture in the stage of the globe.
