The Translation of Compliments

恭维语作为一种重要的社会文化载体,为了防止不恰当的恭维语运用可能造成的跨文化误解,我们有必要对之进行深入的分析和探讨。该文旨在采用对比分析的方法对英汉两种语言中恭维语的句法和语义结构等方面进行对比分析,从而得出结论:恭维语跨文化差异是源于社会文化的差异,恭维语是有文化特征的。

Compliments are abundant in both English and Chinese which play roles in greeting,encouragement,gratitude,opening the topic and relieving the contradictions.However,studies of compliments have shown that this speech event is actually far more complicated than it appears in terms of the relation between language,society and culture.In order to prevent the possible cross-cultural misunderstanding because of inappropriate use of compliments,we need to make an analysis and discussion in depth.By arranging and analyzing these data,the author makes a comprehensive study of compliment in structure,contents and etc so as to draw the conclusion that the differences in compliment between the two distinct languages originate from the different social values and beliefs beneath the two cultures.
