Gimple The Fool is one of the most famous short stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer in American Jewish literature. Most scholars regard that the main leadership in Singer’s stories is the man and seldom focus on the female image, however Elka in Gimple The Fool is not just a component of the gender, who is suffered and oppressed by the Jewish tradition and religion while she takes up the burden and mission of the Jewish society at the same time. Singer not only portrays the condition of the Jewish women in that time but also reveals the significance of their existence. This paper aims to discuss the female image in this short story, and explore the social and cultural elements contributing to the female characteristic in traditional Jewish society.
