'The Scarlet Letter'was Nathaniel Hawthorne's masterpiece. Nathaniel Hawthorne has been considered to be first great American writer of fiction to work in the moralistic tradition. This work distinguished him and brought him a momentous position in the history of American literature. Among all of characters, Pearl was the most mysterious and had something original in her features. This paper aims to prove that Pearl is an important character inThe Scarlet Letterthrough the analysis of Pearl who is the most attractive character in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novelThe Scarlet Letter.As for Pearl, there are two major kinds of viewpoints. Some critics think Pearl is not the main character in this novel, while others believe Pearl is a subordinate image.Few scholars think Pearl is also a major character and she serves as an indispensable character in this story. Through the thorough analysis of Pearl's personalities and her relationship between three other main characters, all the detailed evidences prove that Pearl is indispensable in terms of structure and plot. Meanwhile, she links other characters systematically.
