On English Passivization and its Pragmatic Functions

传统语言学认为被动化(passivization)只是英语语篇句法转换的方法之一,因而作为语法练习的必要课程。然而英语语篇中的被动结构不仅句式多样,而且有其独特的语用功能:对信息进行重新编码和解码,实现了语篇的连贯和自然衔接,同时又能突出语篇的重点信息,使读者一目了然。被动语句不应只局限于语法转换功能,其隐性的语用功能更应给予应有的重视。

Traditionally, passivization is only focused on its single sentence level and characteristic of its grammatical transformations from active voice to passive voice. Students are also trained to master this kind of mechanical exercises of transformation. Actually, passivization has its own pragmatic functions in discourses. The adept use of passivization helps emphasize the important information discourse while cohering the whole discourse. In this respect, great attention should be paid to the implicit functions of passivization.
