Metaphorical and metonymic thinking is an effective cognitive means in linguistic analysis. English idioms with color words, as a basic part of language, represent cultural life of western people in different periods. The English idioms with color words can be analyzed from the metaphorical and metonymic perspective. Within the culture background, cognitive analysis of those idioms is more effective. The research indicates the cognitive mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy under certain culture context has properly explained the English idioms with color words, which offers the new perspective to conduct the color-word study in the corresponding fields.
