Nathaniel Hawthorne is always regarded as a master of remarkable insight into human soul in the American literary history. The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne's magnum opus, is a classic novel in American literature in the nineteenth century. The exploring of Hawthorne's feminist consciousness implied in The Scarlet Letter has aroused the interests of many critics since its publication. Influenced by his own life experiences and the feminist movements in the nineteenth century, Hawthorne nurtures his feminist consciousness. It is his feminist consciousness that encourages Hawthorne to create a rebellious woman—Hester in the book. By constructing the plot of his story and depicting his female and male characters, especially the heroine Hester, who transforms the meaning of the letter'A'and builds a new image of women, Hawthorne condemns the unfair treatment of women in the male-dominated culture and his feminist consciousness can be fully detected in The Scarlet Letter.
