Vladimir Nabokov's unfinished draft, The Original of Laura, sparks a prolonged public debate after its publication. Some critics argue that, the relationship between Flora and Hubert is the shabby duplicate of Lolita and Humbert. They accuse Nabokov of being dubious obsess with pedophile theme, which reveals the aging author's creativity in decline. However, it should be noted that as a chess enthusiast, Nabokov would never present a text without playful and intricate plots to the readers. In this novel, he weaves enigmas by details, and decoys the readers off the right path into an ambushed ravine, which is the Lolita pattern. By analyzing Nabokov's stratagems and tracing out his moves in this novel, one can avoid such pitfalls, and appreciate the author's inventive mind.
