摘要
English varieties have grown up in different parts of the world. The traditional prototype paradigm of ELT,which assumed that a non-native learner learned English in order to communicate with a native speaker,no longer represents the primary context of the use of English today. Therefore,in ELT,besides learning standard English, sensitivity to English varieties should be cultivated so as to promote communicative competence.
