On Treatment of Figurative Expressions in Literary Translation

该文旨在探讨如何处理文学翻译英汉互译中出现的比喻语句。论文首先阐述了比喻语句的概念,接着通过对典型英汉、汉英文学翻译实例的详细评析讨论了不同情形的比喻语句应该运用不同的翻译方法:用译语中对等的喻体来代替原语中的比喻形象;通过直译保留原语中的比喻形象;用释义法进行意译。运用不同翻译方法的目的是帮助译文读者避免不必要的努力就能获取原文作者的意图。

In this paper the present author discusses the treatment of figurative expressions in literary translation between Chinese and English. The concept of figurative expressions is presented. It is followed by detailed analysis of some representative examples of literary translation between Chinese and English. Different translation skills are adopted for figurative expressions in different situations, such as substituting a metaphor or simile by an equivalent one in TL, keeping the same figurative image by translating literally, translating by a paraphrase. The purpose of using various translation skills is to help the target audience arrive at the intended meaning of the original author without paying unnecessary efforts.
