After summarizing the main content and developing trend of the Adaptation-Relevance Model ,and introducing the definition and classification of understatement in foreign language, it attempts to apply the Adaptation-Relevance Model to the study of understatement, proposing that the use and understanding of understatement is a process of adaptation and relevance. It concludes that the adaptation is the adaptability of existing contextual assumption, and the relevance is the relationship between cognitive contextual assumptions and the information to be processed.
