On the Function of Dialect Representation in The Lesson of Toni Cade Bambara

This article explores Bambara’s use of dialect in her short story The Lesson. Though some critics have mentioned the“colorful language”of Bambara’s characters, most debates that The Lesson has not centered on the dialect representation in the speech of her characters as well as its functions by using such dialect representation. This article analyzes the function of dialect representation in The Lesson of Toni Bambara from the perspectives of phonology, lexicon and syntax and concludes that the use of such dialect representation is not only successful in adding local color, mirroring social significance, but also consistent with Bam?bara’s social and artistic pursuits.
