An Analysis of Toast by President Nixon from Appraisal Theory

本文采用定性与定量结合的方法,依据评价理论,从态度、介入和级差三方面,研读尼克松访华时所作的祝酒词,探讨其中的人际意义,揭示出尼克松的祝酒词蕴含了丰富的态度意义资源。为了圆满完成中美关系史上的破冰之旅,他有策略、有步骤地调用满载积极情感的词汇,通过多种判断手段与鉴赏资源,最终使得其祝酒词不但感情洋溢,而且文采飞扬、饱含哲理、使人信服。

This thesis mainly exerts appraisal theory by Martin and White to analyze the vocabulary choices in the toast by Presi-dent Nixon made in China and puts the quantitative and qualitative analysis in the frame of the three subsystems of appraisal theo-ry, namely, qttitude, engagement and graduation. The study shows that Nixon's toast is highly attitudinal. With the purpose of suc-cessfully realizing its epoch-making trip to China and by means of well-coded words, various evaluations and appreciations, hemakes his toast not only highly emotional, but also quite literarily skillful, philosophical and convincing.
