《语言论》是萨皮尔的主要代表作,在美国语言学界有广泛的影响。该书详细论述了语言的定义,语言成分,以及语言与文学和思维的关系等。以唯物辩证的观点来审视,语言在一定程度上的确影响着思维的复杂程度,但它并不决定人们的思维和世界观。作为语言结构,也不能制约人们对客观世界的认识。而作为语言,同样也不能决定人们的文化观念及意识形态,所以单纯的强调语言的决定性是没有意义的。
'Linguistic' is the main representative of Sapir, and have a broad impact in the United States of linguistics. The bookdiscusses in detail the definition of language, language elements, as well as the relationship between language and literature andthinking and so on.
