Translation Strategies of the Cultural Blanks in the Subtitles of Chinese Ancient Costume Films

字幕英译是中国古装电影占领全球电影市场的关键,而一些中国文化中熟悉的概念,在其他文化中完全不存在,即所谓的文化空白,使翻译难度增加,外国观众也难以理解电影内容。该文提出一些翻译策略——改编法、压缩法、省略法、释义法、保留法,应对古装电影字幕英译中的文化空白现象。

Subtitle translation is crucial for Chinese ancient costume films to develop the global film market. But some concepts in Chinese culture do not exist in other cultures, which are called cultural blanks. It increases the difficulty of translation and makes it hard for foreign audiences to understand the plots. This paper puts forward some translation strategies---adaption, condensa?tion, omission, paraphrasing and reservation, to cope with cultural blanks in subtitle translation of Chinese ancient costume films.
