On Theories of Metaphor

This paper discusses theories of metaphor from Aristotle to the nowaday linguists, emphasizing George Lakoff ’s theory. Richards, Johnson, Tversky are all mentioned, especially the cognitive linguist Fauconnier. The most important part is about three types of metaphor according to Lakoff’s theory:structural metaphor, orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor.
