The Use of Interpersonal Linguistic Features in the English Abstracts of Chinese and International Science Journal Papers

通过对比分析中文和国际农业核心期刊英文摘要语料库,探讨中外学者在科技论文英文摘要人际话语特征(宏观修辞结构和元话语)使用中的差异。研究发现,国际期刊英文摘要更注重利用背景和结论语步开启和拓展作者与读者的对话空间;中外学者对模糊限制语、强调词、内指标记语、自我提及语等元话语手段的使用也体现出不同的规律特点。研究结果显现了中外学者对建构英文摘要人际意义的不同理解,对于科技论文英文摘要写作教学有启示作用。

The present study makes a contrastive analysis of the interpersonal linguistic features, particularly rhetorical structure and metadiscourse, used in the English abstracts published in Chinese and international agricultural science journals. It is found that international writers include significantly more Background and Conclusion moves in their English abstracts than Chinese writ?ers to open and expand the writer-reader dialogic space. Different patterns of using metadiscourse markers (e.g. hedges, boosters, endophoric markers, self-mentions) are also found in the English abstracts written by the two groups of writers. These findings indi?cate that Chinese and international scholars have different inclinations to select interpersonal linguistic features to construct inter?personal meanings of English abstracts and achieve the rhetorical purpose of the genre. The implications for English abstract writ?ing pedagogy are also discussed.
