Nathaniel Hawthorne is well known for his short fictions, which has great achievements in American literature as well as in the world literature. His writing ideas and artistic features are manifested in the short fictions. One of his short fictions, Young Goodman Brown, is filled with many blanks, leaving the readers large room for fulfilling.The Blank theory, advocated by Wolfgang Iser, requires to fulfill the indeterminacies and blanks according to readers’experiences and imaginations, which otherwise could inspire readers’aesthetic abilities to imagine and fulfill the blanks in the works. According to the Blank theory this paper gives an analysis of blanks in Young Goodman Brown.
