Abstracts:As the earliest English literature, the epic Beowulf was written in 10th century, describing the lives of Scandinavians in 3th and 4th century. The language used in the epic is old English, but the original text applied in this article is the modern English translation, which has preserved most metaphors in old English version. The article intends to analyze and categorize these meta-phors from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, in order to give the readers a better understanding of the images used in the epic. Josef Stern has mentioned in his works in 2000 that various elements can interact and express each other through meta-phors; based on this theory, the article mainly focuses on the“water”metaphor in Beowulf, analyzes the formation of meta-phors, as well as the cultural and social background.
