Humor is the quality that makes something interesting or entertaining. People always find that there is something worth laughing in the literatures and movies in English. People whose mother tongue is English make jokes and humorous comments in their daily life frequently. In the past years, the humor has been studied in different aspects. However, after the Grice's Cooperative Principle's occurring, there seems to be a better way to analyze humor. From the pragmatic view, most humor comes from the violation of the Cooperative Principle. The Cooperative Principle can be divided into several maxims and if any maxim is violated, something special will be expressed and thus the humor is created. Having a good understanding about the humor in English can be helpful in the study of English culture and social life.
