The feminist movement thriving in 1960 s and the incurred vogue for feminism exerted a profound influence on literary works and criticism. People started to cast their eyes on female authors and feminist literature. Austrian writer, Stefan Zweig, being a male author, is hailed as"a handkerchief for all women". He shows significant concern and care for women who are stereotyped as inferior and unprivileged, and has created many impressive love stories and touching female images. Letter from an Unknown Woman and its heroine are among the most notable representatives.Apart from analyzing the typical gender role women play in society from the case study of the unknown woman, this paper, under the guidance of feminist criticism theory, also looks into the social and economic oppression on her, and explores her psychological experience arising therefrom.
