钱玄同是浙江湖州人,是民国时期语言文字改革的积极分子。他主编的《国音常用字汇》修正了《国音字典》的不足,正式确立了以北京语音为标准音的国音,为当时推广国音提供了依据。同时,《国音常用字汇》也为新中国《新华字典》的编纂提供了借鉴和参考。

Characters Commonly Used in Phonetics was edited by Qian Xuantong,an active advocator of Chinese language reforms during the period of the Republic of China,who was born in Huzhou of Zhejiang Province.It made up for the deficiency of Phonetics Dictionary and made Peking-dialect-based phonetics the standard of Chinese Phonetics,providing a basis for promoting Chinese phonetics.Also,it offered some reference for the edition of Xinhua Dictionary of the New China,that is,the People's republic of China.
